A Journey Through Our Heritage
Throughout our history, certain places have held special significance for the Marist family. These locations are not just historical landmarks; they are living sources of inspiration and pilgrimage for Marists and friends from around the world.
With “The Marist Places” we refer to places in France which are significant for the story of the founding of the Society of Mary by a group of French Marists and its founder, Fr Jean-Claude Colin.

Fourviere
It is a shrine dedicated to Our Lady. On 23rd July 1816 the twelve Marist aspirants, priests and seminarians, climbed the hill to the shrine of Our Lady of Fourviere and they placed their promise to found the Society of Mary.

cerdon
The first Marist community was born in this humble village. From Cerdon, Fr. Colin began to shape the Society and strengthen its missionary spirit.

Belley
In Belley, where Fr. Colin resided, the Society received papal approval. This city became a cornerstone in giving stability and legitimacy to the young congregation.

La Capucinière
It was in this small chapel that the first Marists professed their vows in front of the recently new Superior General elected Fr. Jean-Calude Colin, giving visible form to their commitment to Christ and Mary.

puylata
Fr. Colin moved from Belley to Lyons and the house of Puylata to set up the Marist headquarters. From here he oversaw the development of missionary Marist activity both in France and abroad.

La Neylière
The final residence of Fr. Colin. Here he spent his last years, leaving behind his wisdom, writings, and the spiritual legacy that continues to guide Marists today.
